This is a historical adventure. This is the story of a passionate and idealistic young man named Joseph in fourteenth century England. He gives up his career as a butcher with his trade guild in York and follows a young woman, Dorothy, and her family into the border country to the north. Dorothy and her family are going to take over the farm they inherited when her uncle died. The English-Scottish war is heating up and the border region is very unstable. This is the time of Edward I, (Longshanks), and William Wallace. Every effort has been made to ensure the historical events and flavor of the times is accurately portrayed. For those that are familiar with the reference; this story resembles a fourteenth century version of “Little House on the Prairie” written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This story is suitable for ages 13 and up.

As I began this story, I felt as though I was reading a journal of a man of the times he lived in. The style of writing perfectly reflects his station in life and was very authentic to me. The story is one that is truly character driven. I enjoyed getting to know all of them. You will find joy, celebrations, hard work, a satisfying resolution to the antagonist whom I could almost see in my mind as I read of him and his behavior. Mr. Attanasio knows how to give his characters life and imagery that lets you into the scene, little by little, It was refreshing to sit back and read of a time gone by that, even though it had hardships, there was a true love of the simple things, good food, warm shelter, loving friendship, close family and the satisfaction of a day spent in hard work that would produce the necessities of life. I hear of it more and more, that people yearn for the "Good Old Days". I am one of those and that is why this story made such a positive impression on me. I believe anyone would enjoy reading it.

A Butcher Tale edition by Joe Attanasio Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This story follows the experiences of a young apprentice butcher in late thirteenth century England (Brave Heart's time, but it isn't a heroic war story). The protagonist falls in love, has interesting exploits and shows heroism. There are tragic events and heart warming ones and in the end it's a darn good story. It's told in a simple prose that threw me off at first, but I found it fit the story; I felt like I was reading a memoir. It also shares historical information in an interesting way, events as seen through the eyes of the "little people" left to keep England afloat while kings and lords fought for wealth and territory. After reading a couple of chapters I had a hard time putting it down, not because of a heart pounding pace, but because I cared to know what each character's future held. Give this book a chance.
Set in England and Scotland in the fourteenth century, I found I am familiar with many of the locations in this story which made it extra interesting for me.
Although it contains Lords, kings, priests, knights and peasants, it is by no means a fantasy story. As far I as I can gather, from my own historical knowledge, the tale is factually and historically correct.
Looking in on the lives of the lower classes was a particular refreshment from the usual grandiose literature concerning the monarchy's and other honoraries.
This is an enjoyable history lesson for younger readers, but I believe all ages will be enlightened by this tale. There is a positive, running message throughout the book even through the darkest days.
I see some of the reviews saying this book needs editing, but from what I've just read, I take it that the author must have dealt with the issue because I didn't come across this problem.
Very sweet and uplifting story...puts your mind in a calming place. Enjoyed the history of the era. The positive outcomes were slightly unrealistic.
While this book was an interesting account of a13th century pivotal figure, it is in serous need of editing. Wrong words, incomplete sentences, missing punctuation, served as a frequent distraction to the story.
Interesting story, but not very well written. Clearly some good research went into the story but the language is written for a 8 to 10 year old.
Liked not a bad story
I bought this book for a light read but have not been able to keep away from it! You instantly fall in love with the characters and their life. With each turn of the page I became more and more in love with the characters as well as wanting to know more. I have found myself reading this historical romance novel whenever I can, even when walking to and from classes.
